Choosing home decor can be difficult. It's hard to find the perfect piece that captures your style and makes a statement at the same.
Celebrity interior designer Kari Whitman has helped numerous Hollywood stars pick statement pieces for their homes, including those of Jessica Alba, Emelio Estevez, and Virginia Madsen.
Here are her expert tips on how to purchase art and other decorative pieces that will seamlessly tie your room together.
Push yourself to go bigger, bolder
"I always push my clients to go a little bit further than their comfort zones and what they like," said the celebrity interior designer.
Whitman always gives her clients various styling books and magazines to get a sense of what they like and where they find inspiration.
From there, she likes to push the boundaries and see where she can go bigger or bolder with decorative pieces. This includes brighter decorative pieces like vases, lamps, and paintings.
Make your room an expression of yourself
Although Kari Whitman's clientele is geared more towards high-end home makeovers, the designer said there's no reason to break bank when styling your home.
"I think it's more important to look inside yourself and see who you are," said Whitman. "Do you love art? Do you love fabric, lighting?
Being creative in inexpensive ways always have great turnovers, according to Whitman. Even with a limited budget you can still go for amazing DIYs and dupes that will match your personality and taste.
Vintage art is cost-efficient and timeless
"Art is where I tell my clients to spend the most money on," said the interior designer. "There are certain things that last forever, and art is just one of those things."
As an additional note, Whitman loves to find vintage pieces that will hold their values. "I always think 10 years down the road and [vintage art] is always timeless."
