Not many people would associate robots with artistic capabilities.

But a contest put together by Andrew Conru, the founder of FriendFinder Networks, is shedding light on robots' ability to be creative.

"A lot of people don't realize that technical fields are very creative in itself," Conru told Tech Insider. "I thought it would be cool to do an interdisciplinary contest that has people coming at it from the art world and tech world."

There are two categories in the contest that people can submit to: Telerobotics, which is for robots that collaborate with humans, and Fully Automated painting robots. The deadline is April 14.

The grand prize in the Fully Automated category is $30,000. Those who win the Telerobotics category can take home $10,000, and there's also a $5,000 prize for "best technical contribution."

Here's 15 incredible pieces of art created by robots that are entered in the contest:

Oliver Deussen and Thomas Lindemeier (pictured left to right) created the eDavid robot in the computer science department of the University of Konstanz in Germany.

The robot is actually an ordinary welding robot used for manufacturing cars.

But the duo equipped the robot with sensors, a camera, and a control computer to make beautiful pieces of art.
